This article is about waffles but it starts with a bad habit. That's right. I had a bad habit and I was determined enough to be able to kick this habit. I used to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day. There were no clubs for me. No restaurants, no pubs... I used to sit at home, watch TV and smoke like a chimney. One day I said "That's enough, I will quit!" My buddies told me that if I quit smoking I would gain weight so I went to a doctor. He told me not to worry, took my last pack and threw it in the thrash. Some of my impatient readers are asking now, "We are here for the waffles, where are the waffles?" We are coming there.
The first few days were very hard for me. I didn't know where to put my hands, I tried to remember how to breathe, I had some nervous breakdowns and so on. Then I saw that waffle vendor in the middle of the street and had my first waffle since my childhood. Since then whenever anyone asks me if I would like to light a cigarette, I answer, "Did you say cigarettes? I don't smoke anymore. I only eat waffles."
In psychology, psychologists talk about something called substitution. This is when an addict kicks his habit and puts some other bad habit to substitute it. My substitute for cigarettes is waffles which is at least not a bad habit. When you replace one passion with another, you learn things no one else cares to read about.
Did you know soldiers used to use their shields as a waffle iron before Jesus was born? Those from Naples, Italy say that the same soldiers used their shields to make pizzas with tomatoes but if you ask them they would claim first Napolitano Pizza was made in the Stone Age, so I wouldn't trust them about degustation history if I were you. Anyway, I know, that was useless information. One of the most useful things I learned is that, the most delicious waffles are made in Belgium. So I ordered the best waffle maker money can buy from Belgium. Now I can make my own Belgium waffles anytime I want. Also my buddies were right. I gained some weight but I'm not sure whether it is because of quitting cigarettes or taking up waffles.
